ONLINE DOLLAR MARKET AND BLACK MARKET IN NIGERIA

What they are

  • Online / official / formal market  These are rates you see on platforms, banks, forex bureaus, remittance services, etc. They reflect regulated or semi-regulated exchange rates, sometimes with markups.

  • Black / parallel / “aboki” market These are unofficial rates set by individuals or small operators, often meant for cash trades. They tend to diverge from the official rates, usually higher (i.e. worse for naira holders) when demand for dollars is strong.

Current rates & examples

Here are some sample rates I found as of now (or very recently) in Nigeria:

Market / SourceRate (₦ per USD)Notes / caveats
Mid-market / “official / online”~ ₦1,472.26 This comes from Wise’s mid-market rate.
Money transfer / remittance providersaround ₦1,535 – ₦1,567 These include markups, fees.
Black / parallel market~ ₦1,535 (or more) AbokiForex lists ₦1,535 for 1 USD in black market rates.
Other black market reports₦1,490 (approx) Some local sources and aggregators report ~ ₦1,490.

From those, you can see that:

  • The official / online / mid-market rates are lower (i.e. fewer naira per USD) compared to black market rates.

  • The black market premiums reflect scarcity, demand, and risk of dealing in an unregulated environment.

Here are some live / recent USD → NGN rates (online / formal vs black market) I found, plus caveats. Use them as estimates because rates change fast.

Live / Formal / Online Market Rates

SourceRate (₦ per USD)
Investing.com~ ₦1,483.11
TradingEconomics~ ₦1,485.50
Wise (mid-market)~ ₦1,472
Western Union (estimate including fees)~ ₦1,504.44

These are for formal / regulated / online markets (banks, transfer services, etc.). They reflect official or mid-market rates plus markups / margins by service providers.

Black / Parallel / “Aboki” Market Rates

SourceRate (₦ per USD)
AbokiForex           ₦1,450 (buy) / ₦1,460 (sell)
NgnRates.comSell ~ ₦1,490 (some reports)
NgnRates Black Market page~        ₦1,520–₦1,535 (recent days)
NairaBlackMarket.comBuy ~ ₦1,523.31 / Sell ~ ₦1,524.39

Summary & Commentary

  • In the formal / online markets, USD ↔ NGN is trading around ₦1,470 to ₦1,490, depending on provider, time, and fees.

  • In the black / parallel market, rates tend to be higher—estimates I found range from ₦1,450 to ₦1,535 per USD, depending on the source and whether it’s buy/sell.

  • The spread between markets can be a few dozen to a few hundred naira, which matters a lot for large amounts.
